A true story:
The most amazing moment in my life occurred one Sunday evening in 1989. I was with my family in a small church in rural Somerset bored witless by a visiting American preacher who had spoken for about an hour. I did not want to be there, but in order to keep the peace with my family I was sitting it out. When the preacher had finally finished talking, he invited people to move from their seats to the front of the church if they wanted to give their lives to Jesus Christ. Naturally speaking this is not the kind of thing that appeals to bored seventeen year olds! However, this was the point at which God stepped in, and in that moment I became aware that I had to make a choice between living life my way or living it God's way. I knew right then that I had to surrender everything to God, and as I made my way to the front of the church I was overwhelmed by the knowledge of God's love for me and an incredible sense of being accepted by him. Immediately I knew that all the stuff I had heard about Jesus Christ being able to forgive people and change their lives was more than just theory - it actually worked! I came away with a great sense of peace and a real assurance that I was a child of God and could look forward to spending eternity with him. A whole load of negative emotions including fear of death disappeared that evening and I knew that this was the first day of a new life. I have now been what is commonly referred to as a born again Christian for about half of my life and I can honestly say I have no regrets. I have found that Christianity is not about being religious but about living life in the way that God intended us to live it. Jesus said, "I have come that they might have life, and have it to the full". I have found by personal experience that when Jesus is at the centre of things then life is worth living and it is full of purpose and hope. I have seen him change hopeless situations, heal the sick and give suicidal people a reason to live. I have seen him set people free from guilt, addictions and destructive behaviour. I am convinced that Jesus Christ really is the hope of this world and I hope that everybody who bothers to read this will also get to know him like I do.
